Revital becomes sole company in African to manufacture Covid-19 vaccine syringes

Revital Healthcare (EPZ) Limited has gained international recognition for its efforts in the fight against the Covid-19 pandemic. The company has earned the distinction of being the sole African entity authorized to manufacture Covid-19 vaccine syringes, a status that only five other companies in the world share. Nigeria, the first country to receive Revital’s auto-disable syringes, recently took delivery of 800,000 of them worth Sh4 million. These specialized syringes have the capacity for a single use and are rendered inoperable once used.

The syringes were transported from Moi International Airport in Mombasa to Lagos via Ethiopian Airlines on Wednesday, departing at precisely 5 p.m. The shipment of syringes will be utilized for the Sputnik V vaccine, the first Covid-19 vaccine officially authorized for use in Nigeria, which was received from Russia.

Revital produces four million immunisation syringes a month, among a range of other medical products. This approval made the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation approach us last month to pre-plan for the vaccine syringes. The foundation has partnered with us so as to mass-produce the vaccines syringes for them.

Revital Healthcare has been producing an array of medical disposables for the last 12 years, consisting of 14 items such as immunisation syringes, auto-disable syringes, Covid-19 testing kits, PPE kits, and surgical face masks. Their products have been distributed across 14 African countries, including six government agencies. These countries comprise Kenya, Tanzania, Rwanda, Burundi, Uganda, Madagascar, Mozambique, and Malawi.

In the 12 years that we have been in production, we have not received enquiries from outside Africa. But now, after the WHO license, we are getting enquiries from UK, the US, Brazil, Canada, Myanmar, Vietnam, Philippines, among other countries. This is largely because President Uhuru’s Big Four Agenda has empowered us and now we would encourage Kenyan firms to help promote local products through the ‘Buy Kenya, Build Kenya’ initiative.

Revital Healthcare’s recent decision to export face masks to the UK for the first time demonstrates a high level of confidence in their products. The company is highly regarded for its dedication to the local community, having employed more than 400 Kilifi county residents, mostly women. Moreover, the manufacturer has made an offer to provide all 47 counties in Kenya with Covid-19 test kits that can test at least 1,000 samples daily.
