Revital Healthcare and JICA: A Joint Effort to Bolster Africa’s Health Infrastructure

Revital Healthcarhas expanded its production capacity and global reach through the Home Grown Solutions Accelerator, a collaborative initiative by JICA and AUDA-NEPAD. This partnership exemplifies the impact of supporting local enterprises to enhance healthcare resilience across Africa.

At Revital Healthcare, our mission has always been simple but powerful: to provide high-quality, affordable medical supplies manufactured in Africa, for Africa. The COVID-19 pandemic didn’t just test our resolve — it became the moment that defined our purpose on a larger stage.

In a time when global supply chains were collapsing and African countries were left scrambling for basic healthcare essentials, we knew we couldn’t wait for help. We had to act — and we had to lead.

Thanks to the unwavering dedication of our team and the critical support of partners like JICA and AUDA-NEPAD through the Home Grown Solutions (HGS) Accelerator, Revital stepped forward — and today, we are proud to be at the forefront of healthcare manufacturing and innovation in Africa.

JICA’s Strategic Selection of Revital Healthcare

In 2021, amidst a competitive pool of 56 applicants, Revital Healthcare EPZ Ltd., was selected as one of five companies for the HGS Accelerator’s pilot phase. This selection was based on Revital’s demonstrated potential to significantly impact Africa’s healthcare landscape through the production of essential medical supplies such as syringes, rapid diagnostic kits, and infusion sets.

The HGS Accelerator provided Revital with tailored business advisory services, addressing challenges in business management and access to finance. This support was instrumental in enabling Revital to raise approximately 700 million yen from private investors and foundations, facilitating a 3.5-fold increase in syringe production and expanding exports beyond Africa.

The Power of Partnership: How JICA Helped Us Scale for Impact

In 2021, Revital Healthcare was selected as one of only five companies for the pilot phase of the HGS Accelerator, a program designed to support African healthcare innovators through hands-on, tailored business support. This opportunity came at a pivotal moment — we had the ambition and capacity to scale, but we needed the resources to do so.

Working closely with JICA and Boston Consulting Group under the HGS program, we developed a clear path forward. Together, we refined our growth strategy, restructured how we presented ourselves to investors, and built a compelling case for funding.

The results were transformative: we successfully raised 700 million yen from private investors and foundations. This funding enabled us to expand our syringe production by 3.5 times, increase our exports beyond Africa, and reinforce our commitment to supporting Africa’s vaccination and healthcare needs from the inside out.

Manufacturing Hope, Not Just Products

Every syringe we produce at Revital is more than just a medical device — it’s a symbol of what’s possible when Africa leads its own solutions. As the only WHO PQ-certified manufacturer of auto-disable syringes in Africa, we understand the responsibility we carry, not only for Kenya but for the entire continent.

We’ve seen firsthand the consequences of relying on foreign imports for essential healthcare needs. And we’ve made it our mission to change that reality — to make Africa self-reliant, resilient, and ready for the future.

With our expanded capacity, we’re supporting governments, NGOs, and global health partners to meet urgent needs in routine immunization, COVID-19 vaccination, maternal health, and more. And we’re just getting started.

Home-Grown, Africa-Led: Why This Matters

The Home Grown Solutions Accelerator didn’t just help us grow — it validated a belief we’ve always held: African companies have the knowledge, drive, and solutions to solve Africa’s biggest challenges. What we sometimes lack are the right platforms, partnerships, and support to accelerate that impact.

Programs like HGS, led by AUDA-NEPAD and supported by partners like JICA, are proving how meaningful public-private collaboration can unlock the potential already rooted in the continent.

We are proud to be a living example of this vision in action.

Looking Ahead: Revital’s Role in Africa’s Healthcare Future

Our story doesn’t end with COVID-19. If anything, the pandemic was just the beginning.

At Revital, we see ourselves as more than a manufacturer — we are part of a larger movement to build an integrated, self-sufficient healthcare system for Africa. We believe in local solutions, local leadership, and local innovation. And we are committed to growing responsibly, sustainably, and with impact at our core.

As more African countries look inward to strengthen their healthcare systems, we will continue to be there — designing, producing, and delivering critical healthcare products made in Africa, for Africa.

To our partners, our team, and everyone who believes in the power of home-grown solutions: thank you for walking this journey with us. Together, we’re not just transforming supply chains — we’re transforming lives.

Buzz on Revital Healthcare’s Strategic Alliance

“When Africa and Japan are working together for co-creating solutions for various challenges, it is critical to involve innovative private sector players in Africa. I think it is important for JICA to play a role as a catalyst to link innovative local companies tackling social issues with nation-building. At TICAD8 (The Eighth Tokyo International Conference on African Development), which is scheduled to be held in Tunisia this year, I would like to see stronger involvement of private sector players in Africa, as well as Japanese government’s commitment to support them,”
